Young people-inspired renovations at Home I

Like many of our homes, Home I (as a specific Learning Disabilities home) has a special sensory room for it’s children and young people which provides a safe space to regroup, relax, take a moment, and heal.

Recently, however, the team noted that the space was being used far more as a games room and storage space for lots of arts and crafts materials. Eager to improve the space, staff sat down with the young people to find out how they could make the room more bespoke to their needs, and learned that most were keen to have a TV room so they could have movie nights together. The young people also voiced their wishes to hav e a dedicated crafting space, and so both ideas were combined and plans were considered.
With the maintenance team at the ready, everyone joined forces and set to work revamping the space… and what a truly wonderful multi-purpose room they’ve created! Paired with a bold and uplifting colour scheme, the room now features a huge L-shaped sofa and TV (perfect for at-home cinema experiences) as well as a sensory corner and crafting station; staff were mindful that the home still needed calming areas to support ongoing sensory needs, so incorporating the latter two areas within the room means everyone be part of group activities if they wish and enjoy the the space in various ways.

Within the first few days of it being finished, the young people had already had two movie nights and spent hours crafting! A big thanks to the whole team for making this happen; we know this space will be thoroughly enjoyed and will have such a positive impact on all living at the home.
